Hawaii Cancels March State Championships

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) is forgoing its March 2021 state championships under their modified calendar, affecting air riflery, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, outrigger canoe paddling, soccer, swimming and diving, and wrestling, which are all slated to begin January 4, 2021.
The decision was based on several factors, including, but not limited to, travel restrictions, and that leagues were already conducting shortened season, according to an issued press release.
“Our intent for canceling the first set of state tournaments was to allow our member schools the opportunity to participate in a longer league season, rather than a truncated one with regional and state tournament play for only a limited number of schools,” said HHSAA Executive Director Chris Chun in the press release. “Although the state tournaments are canceled, leagues are not restricted in conducting their seasons if it is deemed safe to do so. We will continue to work with the Department of Health and government officials for the possibility to hold state tournaments for the remaining sports in late May.”
The sports that are impacted by the HHSAA’s decision include air riflery, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, outrigger canoe paddling, soccer, swimming and diving, and wrestling.
The remaining sports scheduled March-May include baseball, football, golf, judo, softball tennis, track and field, water polo, volleyball.
On Monday, the private-school Interscholastic League of Honolulu announced the cancellation of five winter sports, but would also move forward with the remaining sports with protocols, according to a report from Hawaii Prep World.
