One of the most successful high school wrestling coaches in the country was ordered held on bail Tuesday after being arraigned on child pornography charges.

David Castricone, 60, the North Andover High School coach who has racked up more than 600 wins in his 38-year career, resigned his post after his arrest Friday citing “health and personal reasons.”

Prosecutors said Castricone admitted entering the girls’ locker room at least nine times, a claim that is confirmed by surveillance video. Prosecutors said after a student caught him in the girls’ locker room, he told school administrators he was looking for a scale, even though the wrestling matches weigh-in period was over.

Prosecutors also said Castricone told the school’s athletic director that he wanted to open a thong underwear factory in Brazil.

Castricone, who was released on $1,500 bail, said he started viewing porn last winter when his wife of 38 years went to Florida.

Police confiscated numerous images of child pornography during a search of his home after receiving a tip.

“We’re in the infancy of this investigation, and I’m sure we’re going to be continuing with this over the next several weeks,” said North Andover Police Chief Richard Stanley.

Team members and their parents said they were shocked and stunned to learn of the charges against the coach, who also runs a successful roofing business in town. They were called to an emergency meeting at the campus with school officials.Linda Kincaid’s son is on the wrestling team. She said he was distraught.

“This is the most upset I’ve seen him about anything,” she said.

“We will have counselors in the building to help those students who need counseling,” said school Superintendent Christopher Hottel.

Castricone’s former team will attempt to defend its championship title against Natick High School on Wednesday.

Castricone will return to court on March 30.
