Glanville Now Coaching In UFL

March 21, 2011 /

Jerry Glanville, a colorful former NFL head football coach, is the new head coach of the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials.

Glanville, 69, succeeds former Colonials skipper Chris Palmer, who was 3-5 in his only stint running the team in 2010, the team said Monday.

Glanville, known for his trademark all-black attire and penchant for reserving game tickets for Elvis Presley, is due in Hartford this week to meet with fans, media, team staff and members of the local business community and tour team facilities, the Colonials said.

“We have brought a proven winner and a colorful person to Hartford and he is certain to excite and entertain our fans,’ Colonials owner Bill Mayer said of Glanville.

Glanville led the National Football League’s former Houston Oilers from 1985 to 1989 and was head coach of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons from 1990 to 1993. He has worked as a sportscaster, NASCAR car owner and driver, and assistant college football coach since leaving the NFL.

The UFL’s Jim Fassel of  Las Vegas and Dennis Green of Sacramento are the league’s other head coaches with NFL head coaching experience, the UFL said.
