New rule allows Iowa 8th graders to compete in high school sports

The Iowa Board of Education has approved a rule allowing eighth graders to compete in high school sports beginning Aug. 1 ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

According to state officials, the rule is meant to increase participation in certain sports, particularly among smaller schools in Iowa.

Under current rules, Iowa eighth graders are allowed to try out for varsity baseball and softball teams because those sports take place in the spring and summer, but the new rule will open the door to participation in other sports. Students will not be allowed to play on both middle school and high school teams at the same time.

School districts will not be required to implement the policy, and reports indicate the state’s “No Pass, No Play” rule that requires high school students to be passing their classes to participate in sports, will not apply to eighth graders.

“I think what we may see is schools being able to field JV teams, freshmen teams that they haven’t been able to field before,” Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Executive Director Tom Keating said to USA Today. “It gives kids a little bit more opportunity to play developmentally. Instead of sitting on the bench maybe in a varsity uniform, they get a chance to play at a lower level.”

Other reports indicate the new rule will require medical physicals to ensure younger athletes can safely compete with athletes who could be up to four years older than they are.

Iowa is now the 25th state to adopt such a policy.
