Paul Pendergast expressed an interest in becoming the permanent athletic director at UConn when he grabbed the interim tag in August. Somewhere along the way, he changed his mind.

Pendergast removed his name from consideration for the permanent job Wednesday, and the school has launched a nationwide search for the successor to Jeff Hathaway, who was forced out last summer after clashes with some in the athletic department and a decided dip in fundraising.

Pendergast will remain at UConn in a fundraising capacity, focusing on athletics and the UConn Health Center, and will co-chair the eight-person search committee fashioned by school President Susan Herbst.
