‘The White Mamba’ Scalabrine Open To Coaching

For most Chicago Bulls fans, the return of MVP point guard Derrick Rose has overshadowed the return of a player known to hoops fans as “The White Mamba.”

Brian Scalabrine, the NBA’s favorite bench mascot, is in the twilight of his career after 11 seasons in the league. While he’s waiting until a team says no to him before he retires, he’s reportedly open to the idea of coaching.

Aggrey Sam of CSNChicago.com reports that Scalabrine is a top candidate to be an NBA assistant coach.

With the departure of Bulls assistant Rick Brunson to the Bobcats and other replacement options falling through, Scalabrine has become a front-runner, according to the report.

Whoa. Wait a second. It’s one thing to transition to a TV personality (which Scal would be awesome at), but coaching? Considering Scalabrine looks strikingly similar to Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell in Semi Pro), couldn’t we see Scal as the owner/player/promoter (fighting a live bear)?

While the idea of Scalabrine coaching might come off as comical or a PR stunt for the Bulls (fans give him standing ovations when he’s played in just over 200 minutes in his two years with Chicago), the player does have a championship ring with the Celtics and his relationship with coach Tom Thibodeau goes back to his playing days with the C’s.

Scalabrine has always been known as a bench player who shouts feedback at players like he’s another coach, and with his playing/winning experience comes a strong knowledge of the game.

Still, it could just be talk. And Scalabrine doesn’t have plans to retire just yet. He recently told Bulls.com that he’s passionate about playing a 12th NBA season.
