Tennessee A.D. Mike Hamilton To Resign

June 7, 2011 /

Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton, whose tenure with the school has been marred by NCAA violations in several of the Volunteers’ athletic programs, will resign Tuesday.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Jim Murphy, the vice chairman of the Tennessee Board of Trustees, said that Hamilton would step down from his position.

“He’s an outstanding guy who’s done a lot of good things for the university, so obviously we’re going to work hard to find somebody to replace him,” Murphy said.

Hamilton’s resignation comes after an NCAA probe into the school’s athletics department, including the basketball team under former coach Bruce Pearl, the football program under former coach Lane Kiffin and the baseball team under ex-coach Todd Raleigh.

The Associated Press reports that a spokeswoman for Tennessee chancellor Jimmy Cheek said a news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Tennessee.

Tennessee is scheduled to go before that NCAA’s Committee on Infractions beginning Saturday.
