South Dakota public schools are now forbidden from signing exclusive contracts for covering or broadcasting student activities.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a bill barring those contracts Friday morning.

Sen. Mark Johnston, R-Sioux Falls, and other supporters said these exclusive contracts hurt citizens by making the games harder to watch, and said they infringed on freedom of the press.

Schools argued they had a right to control the broadcast of their own sports and activities, and distinguished between media coverage and broadcasting.
