IOWA CITY, Iowa — Records show the number of police officers at University of Iowa home football games has nearly tripled over the last six years.

The Gazette newspaper in Cedar Rapids reports Friday that according to the university’s Department of Public Safety there are up to 120 officers and more than 100 private security guards on game days. Public safety associate director Dave Visin says between 60 and 80 off-campus police officers are paid $55 an hour to work during games.

Records show that last season the school’s Athletic Department spent more than $330,000 to pay officers to work during seven home football games. Visin says the officers are needed for everything from common troubles to “a full-scale evacuation.”

Iowa plays Penn State on Saturday in Iowa City.
