After failing during the June Brainerd School Board meeting, a new proposal was approved to help alleviate some of the costs in the Brainerd High School athletic fees as presented by the Brainerd Finance Committee during Monday night’s board meeting.

Reading very similar to the first proposal of lowered costs, the committee’s recommendation was to go from the current three-tier structure to a two-tier structure with costs lowered by $75 and $100 in some areas.

Currently, participants in tier 1 sports pay $250, tier 2 pay $350 and tier 3 pay $425. Fee reductions would drop tier 2 from $350 to $250 and tier 3 from $425 to $350.

In addition, the revised proposal would have the school district assume the support schedule of remaining Warrior Way funds — $180,000 — and its cost for the next three years.

Steve Lund, director of business services, added that with this revised proposal the district would expect a budget impact of roughly $81,600 for the next three years and will need to begin planning with the yearly loss of $60,000 in Warrior Way funding to end in three years.

Board Chairman Chris Robinson opposed the motion for approval as presented, saying he was “very concerned about reducing revenues in the district with such a large budget deficit in the district at this time.”

The motion passed 5-1.
