Resume Inaccuracies Sink Villanova Assistant Coach

Martin, whose hiring was announced Aug. 6, stepped down Saturday after an investigation by the university’s human relations department revealed inaccuracies on his resume.

“I have always known Doug to be a good person and coach,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said in a statement released by the university. “He has taken responsibility for his mistake and will move on successfully! We all wish Doug well.”

ESPN.com was the first to report that Martin had what the website called discrepancies on the resume he presented to the university.

According to the bio Martin provided to Villanova, Martin said he played at Wisconsin-Green Bay under head coach Dick Bennett from 1991-95. However, Andrew Gavin, Green Bay’s director of athletic communications, told ESPN.com through an email, “I do not have a record of a Doug Martin playing here and looked through our stats from each of those years as well.”

Martin is not listed on the all-time roster that is posted on the basketball portion of the UW-Green Bay athletic website and his name does not appear in the statistics for the years he claimed to have played for the Phoenix. Those statistics are also posted on the school’s athletic website.

Jeff Nordgaard, who played at UW-Green Bay from 1992-96 and was the captain of the team his senior season told ESPN.com that he had no recollection of playing with a Doug Martin.

“I didn’t play with anyone by that name,” Nordgaard told ESPN.com. “So unless he changed his name …”

ESPN.com also reported that Martin’s Linkedin profile stated that he received a bachelor’s degree from both Wisconsin-Green Bay and Viterbo University, an NAIA school in LaCrosse, Wis. The profile stated that Martin was a four-year letter winner at Green Bay and “captained team my senior year.”

There is a Doug Martin listed as playing at Viterbo from 1990-93. That Doug Martin played in 87 games and averaged 2.5 points per game, according to the school’s athletic website.

The LinkedIn profile has been taken down.

The same information appeared on Paul VI (Va.) High School website, where Martin served as the associate head coach for three years before he was hired by Villanova.

Martin’s biographical information has been removed from the Paul VI website.

In his biography, Martin also claimed he was an assistant coach with the LaCrosse Bobcats in the Continental Basketball Association from 1997-2000.

However, one source said through an email that he had a CBA media guide from 1998-99 and Martin was not listed as an assistant coach. The source said that media guide listed Don Zierden, now an assistant with the Washington Wizards, as the head coach of the Lacrosse Catbirds and Mike Mashak as his sole assistant.

Martin also claimed in his biography that he played professionally in Australia and South America.

Matin also was a head coach for Team Takeover, a highly successful AAU program in the Washington D.C. area before joining the staff at Villanova.
