Northern State University President Jim Smith has announced Joshua Moon as the next Athletic Director at Northern State University. Moon will fill the position of Bob Olson, who will retire in May.

“I am delighted that Josh has agreed to lead our athletic department. He is an energetic and innovative leader,” said Smith. “His experiences in Division 1 will certainly benefit all of us here at NSU.”

Moon, 32, comes to Northern State from Western Illinois University (Macomb, Ill.) where he serves as the senior associate director of athletics. The athletic department at Western Illinois hosts 20 Division I sports teams, 450 student athletes, 50 coaches and 30 administrative staff members and has an annual operating budget of $10.8 million. Moon has previously served as the assistant athletic director for compliance and sports administration at Central Michigan University.

“I have a deep amount of respect for the athletic tradition that exists at Northern State and am very excited to be a part of the team,” said Moon. “This is a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to helping be a part of the next chapter of Wolves athletics.”

The Wautoma, Wisconsin native has a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Bachelor of Science in exercise and sport science from the University of Wisconsin (La Crosse, Wis.) in 2003. He graduated with a master of science in administration from Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) in 2006.

“Josh has worked with some of the best Athletic Directors in the country. He has excellent experiences to share with our cabinet, our coaches, and our student athletes,” added Smith. “Clearly, this was a great field of final candidates — in my opinion, Josh was the best fit with/for our current and future needs. We’ll improve as an athletic program under his leadership.”

Moon and his wife Andria, a recent doctor of education graduate from Central Michigan University, are the parents of two boys, Brady, 4, and Kellen, 1. Moon is expected to begin at NSU in late April.
