A middle school girls basketball coach in Hudson County, New Jersey has been arrested following the discovery of an ongoing sexual relationship with one of his players.

As first reported by the The Jersey Journal, 54-year-old Daniel Curtis was arrested in connection with having an ongoing sexual relationship with one of the 15-year-olds on his girls basketball team. The coach was charged with aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child and had bail set at a whopping $75, 000 following his arrest.

Curtis had served as the seventh and eighth girls basketball coach at Bayonne (N.J.) All Saints Academy grammar school as a volunteer and does not hold any other positions at the school. School officials did not divulge the duration for which Curtis had served as the school’s coach, though a Newark Archdiocese spokesman was quick to claim that he is no longer connected with the Catholic body in any way.

“I am aware of the arrest, but I have no details, Archdiocese of Newark spokesman Jim Goodness told the Jersey Journal. We have already taken steps to ensure that he is not permitted to work at the school with children any longer. This is a matter for police now.”

In an unfortunate yet not uncommon twist, Curtis’ victim has allegedly left the school since the incident. While that should bring a complete close to the incident surrounding the middle school coach, it is unlikely to serve as a closure for the repercussions that Curtis will face for his violations.
