Michigan offering free concussion insurance to prep athletes

Junior and high school athletes in Michigan will now be covered by concussion insurance, offered free of charge by the state athletic association.

MHSAAMichigan becomes the first state to offer free concussion insurance to its members. Montana announced in June it would offer concussion insurance for athletes, but the cost is worked into the schools’ dues. The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) absorbed the entire $300,000 cost.

From MLive.com:

All student-athletes in grades seven through 12 at MHSAA member schools are now eligible to receive the insurance. The policy covers up to $25,000 per claim for student-athletes eligible under MHSAA rules and participating in practices or competitions under the association’s jurisdiction.

“That’s supposed to encourage moms and dads who suspect that their child has an injury because they’re showing a symptom at home after a practice or game – there might be some dizziness or some lack of attention – to go immediately and seek professional medical care and not worry that they don’t have insurance for it or they have high deductibles or co-pays,” MHSAA executive director Jack Roberts said. “This insurance program is going to pay that and encourage people to get to the doctor quickly. No other state has done that. We’re No. 1.”
