Legendary State Track Coach Irv Black, 79, Dies

Legendary track coach Irv Black, 79, passed away Wednesday at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain.

Black was one of the state’s most iconic figures in the sport of track and field, making a name for himself at New Britain High School.

A hammer thrower at Boston University, he competed and coached the sport internationally. Between 1953 and 1988, he coached New Britain track and cross country teams to 28 state titles. Before Black began to coach, the track team hadn’t won a meet in years.
