IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta said Tuesday he hasn’t received any updates about the UI investigation into what caused the January hospitalization of 13 football players, but he expects the report will be done before the 90-day deadline.

Barta spoke to reporters after a meeting of the UI Presidential Committee on Athletics, an advisory group.

The topic of the hospitalized football players wasn’t addressed during the committee meeting, despite the presence of both Barta and team physician Ned Amendola, who was on hand to talk about the Sports Medicine Clinic. Two members of the Presidential Committee on Athletics sent e-mails to athletics officials in January expressing their concern about the situation with the sick players and criticism of the communication to the PCA about it.

But no committee member raised the subject at Tuesday’s meeting. Barta and Ellen Herman, chairwoman of the committee, said it’s likely members are waiting to hear the results of the UI investigation into what caused the player illnesses. That 90-day study is several weeks underway and is being led by President Sally Mason.

“I think the general sense is that until President Mason’s committee is done with their work, there’s really not a lot to talk about,” Barta said. “I know I’m sort of waiting for that. I think that’s probably what we’re all waiting for.”

The Iowa football players were hospitalized Jan. 24 with rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of muscle fibers that can lead to kidney damage. The players all were released from UI Hospitals and Clinics by Jan. 30.

Committee member Jeff Cox, a history professor, said he was disappointed that an update about the players or the investigation wasn’t given at Tuesday’s meeting, the first the advisory group has had since December. He said other faculty ask him frequently about athletics issues, and he sometimes feels the Presidential Committee on Athletics is the “last to know.”

“I haven’t gotten any information” about the situation, Cox said. “It seems to me that it ought to be addressed in this group but it wasn’t.”

Herman, a clinical professor of education, said it’s likely members will ask for details and will have a discussion once the investigation is complete.

“They’re investigating, that’s as much as I know” right now, she said.

She added that communication between the committee and athletics department officials is something members do want to improve.

Depending on what the UI investigation shows, Barta said, it may be appropriate for athletics officials and the PCA to discuss policy or procedure changes.
