Illinois broadcasters and the state’s newspaper publishers are backing a legislative inquiry into the organization that governs high school sports.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the Illinois Broadcasters Association and the Illinois Press Association said they support a proposal to hold hearings into the operations of the Illinois High School Association.

The legislation has drawn scrutiny because it also calls for an evaluation of whether the state should take over the duties of the Bloomington-based organization.

The sponsor of the resolution, state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, said the measure could come up for a vote in the Illinois House next week.

“I’m sure there will be some contention,” Chapa LaVia said.

Its not the first time the press association and the IHSA have tangled. In 2008, the two entities ended up in court over a dispute centering on access to high school sporting events by newspaper photographers.

Press Association chief Dennis DeRossett said the hearings could give taxpayers more insight into the operations of the IHSA.
