Hudl Acquires Top Competitor, APEX

June 7, 2012 /
Lincoln, Neb. – Hudl has made its second acquisition of a top competitor in less than a year as it announced its purchase of APEX on Tuesday morning.

“This acquisition is another big step for Hudl,” said David Graff, Hudl’s CEO. “APEX is a well-respected competitor and we are excited to bring their customers into the Hudl family.”

The acquisition will provide coaches more teams to exchange video with and expose a broader pool of athletes for recruiters. Last July, Hudl acquired its top competitor, Digital Sports Video (DSV), to nearly double its client base and gain control as the top video editing company in the nation.

APEX is located in Pittsburgh, Pa., and has a customer base of 1,600 high schools and colleges, largely concentrated in Pennsylvania and Florida. Hudl is a web-based sports video business in Lincoln, Neb., and has more than 8,000 clients at the high school and collegiate levels.

“One of our values is to innovate with a purpose,” Graff said. “In 2012, we’ve placed a big emphasis on growing our team so we can deliver even more innovations that save coaches time and help them win. With this acquisition, we’ll be pushing even harder on that front.”

This acquisition brings a great deal of excitement to Hudl as there are great benefits to consolidating the customer bases of APEX and Hudl:

  • More teams to exchange video with. Next to Hudl, APEX touts the most high school teams in the nation, including several of the nation’s top programs. Coaches will now be able to instantly trade film through Hudl.
  • A broader pool of athletes with video for recruiters. This is a win-win for everyone. More athletes means more video, which in turn means more exposure to recruiters (and vice versa).
  • Even better tools for coaches. Hudl will be incorporating feedback from both companies’ experiences and all coaches to make Hudl even better.

What does this mean for the future of Hudl?

Hudl’s mission and values remain unchanged: help coaches and their teams win. That means creating new and amazing experiences around our products, staying up-to-date with the latest technologies, and providing world-class support.
“We have a lot of really cool enhancements in the pipeline, and we’re excited that when they are ready to be released they will impact even more teams around the country,” Graff said.
For current Hudl partners, there will not be any change due to the APEX acquisition, only the advantage of exchanging video with more teams joining the Hudl family in the coming months.
