KCRA.com (Sacramento, Calif.)DAVIS, Calif. — Two high school basketball players at Davis Senior High have been re-instated after they were recently kicked off the team.
Malika and Khaliya Wilkins, both 17, said they were never told they’d been cut from the team.
“We didn’t know they were kicked off the team until we read it in the newspaper,” said mother Lorraine Wilkins. Davis Joint Unified School District Superintendent Winfred Roberson said the girls are cleared to play athletically and academically.
The two sisters led the team in almost every statistical category for the Lady Blue Devils.
Roberson said basketball coach Jeff Christian did not follow proper procedure.
“Typically we have a process whenever students are released from the team. That processed was not followed,” said Roberson. As a result, the district fired Christian.
In December, another student was released from the team after allegations surfaced of drug use at a party in October. Both Maliak and Khaliya said the they did not do any drugs at the party. Both girls said they would be back at practice Tuesday.
