Gene Keady Auctions Off Memorabilia

LAFAYETTE, Ind.–Former Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady had a big impact on anyone who ever went to a Purdue basketball game.

Throughout his career, he coached at many different colleges before spending his last 25 seasons coaching at Purdue.

Over those years, he’s acquired a lot of memorabilia and since he is now moving to New York, most of those items are being auctioned off.

Gene Keady’s personal items drew a large crowd at the Raven’s Roost Auction gallery Sunday. One Purdue alumnus Chris Pate said he’s glad to be back in town and hopes to take some of Coach Keady’s memorabilia with him when he goes back home.

“I live in southern Indiana so I got up early to come up and spend the day and then back home tonight, Pate said.

Some of the items being auctioned off are Keady’s final four ticket stubs, signed basketballs, past awards and trophies, signed jerseys, and personal items such as watches and even his mailbox. Auctioneer Tom Fullam said this auction has a lot of great finds for any Purdue fan.

A lot of stuff that you’re not going to see again that is personal to Gene Keady. Things that were given to him during his career from early on when he was a coach at other places as well as here at Purdue, Fullam said.

A long career can only mean a lot of items being auctioned off and Purdue fan Francis Edmonson said he likes to get a feel of what he might want before the auction starts but with so much stuff to choose from it was a little difficult.

There’s so much stuff here it’s unbelievable. It’s hard to see what all there is until you see it up there with the auctioneer when it is put up for sale, Edmonson said.

But Purdue alumnus Chris Pate said after looking through the hundreds of items being auctioned off, he has a pretty good idea of what little piece of Purdue he wants to take back down to Southern Indiana with him.

I’d like to maybe get some of the framed certificates and stuff like that are neat. Maybe one or two of those would be neat to have on the wall. Especially if I can get something from the days I was at Purdue would be especially meaningful, Pate said.
