Gaither Sets Possible Girls Field Goal Record

When girls first started showing up as kickers for high school football teams you’d have thought someone would keep track of their longest field goals.

But apparently no such accounting system is in place, which leaves in doubt whether Alana Gaither set a national record for her gender with a 43-yard field goal over the weekend.

The boot, for Firestone High in Akron, is believed to be the longest on record by a girl kicker, according to WKYC in Ohio. The TV station reported that some observers thought it would have been good from as far as 48 yards.

“Hopefully, it stands up,” Firestone coach Tim Flossie said.

Gaither is 27-for-29 on PATs this season, and all four the field goals she has made have been from longer than 30 yards.

“She’s like money in the bank,” Flossie told WKYC. “Even when we kick in practice, she’ll go 40 yards back and put eight out of 10 through.”

Gaither said she’s received recruiting letters from colleges, but added, “I’m sure that half of those might not even recognize that I’m a girl.”
