Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., has hired former big league manager Bobby Valentine as its new athletics director. An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.

Valentine, 62, lives in nearby Stamford, Conn. He will replace Don Cook, who is retiring in July. Sacred Heart is a small Division I school and belongs to the Northeast Conference.

The Red Sox still owe Valentine more than $2 million after firing him during the offseason. Before his disastrous lone season in Boston, Valentine managed the Rangers and Mets — taking the latter to the World Series in 2000. He also spent several years overseas with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan.
