A former Selma High School coach will get more than $180,000 after a jury found he’d be wrongfully fired and discriminated against because of his Palestinian ancestry.

The Fresno County Superior Court civil trial jury awarded Naser Husein the money on Tuesday as compensation for loss of income and the distress of losing the job.

Husein was born in Selma, and was a local wrestling champion for the high school. Later he became an assistant coach, and took over the program in 2001.

His team won the Central Section Division II championship twice before he was fired in 2008.

Husein’s attorney says the school’s athletic director called Husein a “crazy Arab” who was not fit for the job.

The district’s attorney says Husein was terminated because his teaching credential was for elementary school.
