A former Sandusky High School athletic director has filed suit in federal court alleging the district fired him after he said girls and boys sports were inequal.

Drake Okie’s contract was not renewed by the district in 2010. He filed the lawsuit on Monday.

Sandusky Superintendent Michael Carmean said he couldn’t comment on the lawsuit Tuesday because he had not reviewed it. He said the district is in compliance with a federal law that mandates girls and boys be treated equally.

Okie was the athletic director for one year and said he never had an opportunity to plead his case to the school board when his contract was not renewed.

He alleged the district retaliated after he complained the boys had better facilities and support than the girls. Okie said he also reported possible misuse of money by the Sandusky Alumni Foundation.

Okie wants to regain his job and get back pay and other benefits.
