Drama Continues To Unfold With West Virginia Football Program

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — The drama surrounding the West Virginia Mountaineers took a new turn Tuesday. Former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports reporter Colin Dunlap claims he received a call from Bill Stewart last December about the possibility of digging up dirt on soon-to-be head coach Dana Holgorsen.
“He said, ’Can you get the word scumbag tattooed on the front of the sports page? You need to dig up this dirt. You need to get it out on this guy,’” Dunlap said.
Dunlap made the allegations on Pittsburgh radio station KDKA-FM 93.7 The Fan early Tuesday morning. The comments come after several published reports and blogs point to a strained relationship between Stewart and Dana Holgorsen. There also have been reports of an investigation by WVU into possible leaks from inside the Athletic Department to news publications.
On Tuesday, WVU Athletic Director Oliver Luck released a statement saying: “There have been various reports, much speculation, and rumor around our football program and coaches. But I want to make it clear that I consider these to be personnel matters and while I take them very seriously, I am dealing with them internally and privately — and I will not discuss them publicly.”
But Luck did speak out Tuesday, hitting the airways on the same Pittsburgh radio station.
“We are having a little bit of drama, and we’ll try to get to the bottom of that, but I think the program is in good shape,” Luck said. “I don’t see much damage at all going into the football season because we can get all this sorted out.”
