Recognizing the subtle signs of overtraining in student-athletes

Back-to-school season is an exciting time for student athletes. Teams reunite, coaches establish expectations and athletes are eager to improve and compete.
OTS is an accumulation of training and life stress that results in a persistent decline in athletic performance.
However, it is also a period when training loads can increase rapidly as athletes balance practices, games, academics, social commitments and sometimes club or travel sports.
There is an important distinction between productive training and overtraining. Studies suggest up to 35% of student athletes may experience overtraining syndrome (OTS) by adulthood, highlighting the importance of early recognition and prevention.OTS is an accumulation of training and life stress that results in a persistent decline in athletic performance, often accompanied by physical and psychological symptoms that require weeks to months of recovery.
The condition exists on a spectrum. Functional overreaching represents a normal training response in which short-term fatigue temporarily decreases performance but ultimately leads to improvement after adequate recovery. Nonfunctional overreaching occurs when training stress exceeds the body’s ability to recover. If excessive training continues without sufficient recovery, athletes may develop OTS.
Risk factors
One of the most significant OTS risk factors is excessive training volume.
Youth athletes are at increased injury risk when weekly training hours exceed their age or when they consistently train more than 16 hours per week. Participation in sports year-round without breaks, competing on multiple teams simultaneously and early sport specialization — particularly participation in a single sport for more than eight months per year — are also associated with increased risk.
Other factors include inadequate sleep, poor nutrition and psychological stress. Athletes who strongly identify themselves primarily through their sport could be particularly vulnerable as can those facing significant pressure from coaches or parents to perform at a high level. Studies show female athletes and those participating in endurance sports could also face elevated risk.
A useful guideline for youth athletes is maintaining a healthy balance between organized training and free play. Research suggests that when organized sport participation exceeds free play by more than a 2:1 ratio, the risk of overuse injuries and burnout increases significantly.
Recognizing the warning signs
One of the challenges of overtraining is that coaches, parents and healthcare professionals often only notice subtle changes over time.
The hallmark sign is an unexplained decline in athletic performance. Athletes could be working just as hard as before but running slower, lifting less weight, reacting more slowly or making mistakes they typically would not make. This decline often persists despite continued effort and could be incorrectly interpreted as a lack of motivation.

Physical symptoms can include prolonged muscle soreness, elevated resting heart rate, increased blood pressure, weight loss, appetite changes, gastrointestinal complaints, disturbed sleep and increased susceptibility to illness. Frequent minor injuries, recurring pain, stress fractures, tendon injuries and growth plate inflammation could also indicate excessive training stress.
Psychological symptoms are just as important. Athletes might become irritable, anxious, withdrawn or less enthusiastic. They might demonstrate decreased concentration, declining academic performance, mood changes, loss of motivation or reduced enjoyment of activities.
Because OTS is a diagnosis of exclusion, persistent symptoms should prompt evaluation for other medical conditions such as iron deficiency, thyroid disease, adrenal disorders, diabetes, infections or myocarditis.
If overtraining continues, athletes could develop burnout — one of the leading reasons young athletes quit sports altogether.
Overtraining also increases the risk of overuse injuries and illness and commonly overlaps with relative energy efficiency in sport (RED-S), a condition in which athletes fail to consume enough calories to support their training demands. Athletes with RED-S could experience impaired performance, recurrent injuries, fatigue and menstrual irregularities. Screening for disordered eating and inadequate nutrition is therefore an important component of athlete health.
Prevention strategies
The good news is OTS is largely preventable, and prevention begins with intentional recovery.
Athletes should have at least one or two days off from organized training each week and take approximately two to three months away from a specific sport each year. Training volume should increase gradually, generally by no more than 10-20% per week.
Youth sports should emphasize development, enjoyment, safety, teamwork and sportsmanship rather than focusing exclusively on performance outcomes.
Adequate sleep and nutrition are essential. Recovery should be viewed as a critical component of performance rather than being optional. Athletes who are well-rested learn faster, recover more efficiently and perform more consistently.
Coaches should individualize training whenever possible, maintain accurate training records and avoid repetitive training patterns that create physical and mental monotony. Monitoring athlete wellness through simple check-ins can help identify concerns before they become serious problems.
Equally important is creating a healthy sport culture. Youth sports should emphasize development, enjoyment, safety, teamwork and sportsmanship rather than focusing exclusively on performance outcomes. Athletes should feel comfortable reporting fatigue, pain or emotional stress without fear of punishment or reduced playing time. Research has consistently shown that appropriate rest, diversified training and early recognition of warning signs can significantly reduce the risk of overuse injuries and burnout.
OTS remains an underrecognized but significant threat to the health and performance of student-athletes. Unfortunately, awareness is limited, with some studies suggesting that more than 80% of caregivers are unaware of youth sports overuse and injury-prevention recommendations.
The ultimate goal of sports should not simply be creating better athletes, but fostering healthy, resilient young people who can enjoy lifelong participation in physical activity. By balancing training with recovery, addressing risk factors and prioritizing athlete well-being, we can help student athletes reach their potential while protecting their physical and mental health.
