STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen’s message to students over the latest cowbell flap was simple: You don’t have to like the messenger, but you better respect the message.

Mullen’s plea comes one day after it was revealed that Mississippi State has been informed it has violated the Southeastern Conference’s noisemaker policy. MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin says he expects the school to be fined, and the future of the cowbell is in serious doubt.

MSU fans — especially the students — have rebelled against recent rules regulating when cowbells can be used.

Stricklin says fans need to understand that the SEC is watching during Saturday’s home game against Kentucky, and its decision on the cowbell could hinge on their behavior.
