Byron Wrestling Coach Marti Covert Steps Down After 32 Seasons

Marti Covert has known for more than three decades when he would cease coaching wrestling.

Before taking over Byron’s program in the fall of 1978, Covert spent two years coaching at Redford Union while teaching at a nearby private school.

He did not like that experience.

“I learned fairly quickly how tough it can be to not be teaching in the same building you are coaching in,” he said. “Once I was able to teach and coach in the same building I knew that I would continue until I retired from teaching because I would not be in the building anymore.”
