It’s a nice burden facing Michigan basketball coach John Beilein.

A few weeks into practice, he still doesn’t have a starting five. On some teams, that would be a concern. For the Wolverines, it’s an embarrassment of riches.

“We’re narrowing it down a little bit, Beilein said at the Big Ten preseason basketball meetings today at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. We’re basically trying to figure out what’s the best way to use each guy, rather than who are the five who are together. I love having multiposition players, but we also want to put them into positions where they’re really comfortable while we grow their ability to play different positions.”

The team’s first exhibition is Nov. 1, against Northern Michigan at the Crisler Center.

“If you saw our practice yesterday, we had four different combinations out there, and I don’t think any one of them blew our coaching staff away with how they were working well together, as they will have to to be successful, Beilein said. We’re continuing to experiment with it and, hopefully, we’ll have something in place by the beginning of the Big Ten season.”
