Auriemma Plans To Propose Lowering The Rim

When Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer heard how legendary University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma suggested Monday that lowering the rims would be a good idea, she had just one request.

“If they are going to do it, I hope they do it this year, said Kowalczyk-Fulmer, who coached the Grand Haven girls team to the Class A state championship in March.

We have a 6-foot-5 girl (Abby Cole), and we would put on a show every night. We might have even bigger crowds if we had a girl throwing down dunks all night.”

Auriemma, who has coached Connecticut to seven national championships and 13 Final Four appearances, said he plans to propose the idea to the NCAA rules committee. He told the Hartford Courant Monday that lowering the nets from its current height of 10 feet, possibly by 7.2 inches in honor of Title IX, which was implemented in 1972, would create more excitement in the game. There would be fewer missed layups and the possibility of slam dunks, he added.
