Is Geno Auriemma clairvoyant, or did he just get a heads up from a colleague?

Early Monday afternoon, the University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach beat reporters to the punch when he tweeted that Marynell Meadors, head coach and general manager of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, had been fired.

A little more than two hours later, the Dream sent out a press release stating that Meadors, the 2009 WNBA coach of the year, was being replaced by assistant coach Fred Williams, effective immediately.

Atlanta’s initial statement was careful never to use the words “fired” or “terminated, but Tonya Alleyne, the Dream’s Senior Director of Marketing & Communications, later confirmed that Meadors did not resign from her position but was released by ownership.”

Meadors had coached Atlanta to back-to-back appearances in the WNBA Finals in 2010 and 2011 and had recently returned from London, where she was an assistant to Auriemma, who coached the U.S. women’s basketball team to their fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

Auriemma himself never singled out the “inmate in charge, but note the use of the singular as opposed to the plural inmates.”
