An Outside-The-Box Football Coach For Chamblee High

He’s an Ivy League grad from the Midwest whose conversations take a scholarly tone. He listens to Tupac and reads “The Autobiography of Malcolm X.” He is a convert to Islam after being raised Christian by Mexican-American and Anglo parents. His recorded cellphone greeting begins, “Peace.”

High school football coaches come in all shapes and sizes, but none is configured quite like James Soza. Age alone separates him from the pack: Soza is 27, a pup for a first-time head coach at a prospering program like Chamblee High.

“I felt like I was ready last year in a certain context,” said Soza, then the assistant head coach at Carver High, which had lost 26 straight when he arrived five seasons ago. Since, the Panthers are 32-18.
