94% of NFL Draft first-round picks were multisport athletes

All but two of the players taken in Thursday’s first round of the NFL Draft were multisport athletes in high school, according to the website TrackingFootball.com.

The overwhelming number of players who participated in more than one sport is a good reminder to young athletes that it doesn’t take specialization to develop into an elite athlete. TrackingFootball found that 69% of first-rounders participated in high school track and field, while 59% played basketball.

This isn’t an anomaly, as the NFL Draft tends to be rich with multisport athletes. During the last two years, 88% of first-round picks were multisport athletes in high school.

The only two picks in this year’s opening round who specialized in football were Jarrad Davis (No. 21, Detroit Lions) and Ryan Ramczyk (No. 32, New Orleans Saints).
