Vermont, already with the smallest number of high school athletes, sees biggest decline in participation

Already with the fewest participating high school athletes among the 50 states, Vermont also saw the biggest drop in participation during the 2016-17 school year, statistically speaking. Vermont’s participation rate dropped by 10.5 percent from 2015-16, according to the National Federation of State High School Association’s annual survey. Vermont’s overall population was steady in 2017, according to U.S. Census estimates, with a gain of approximately 300 people from the previous year’s estimates.
