The University of Memphis  has officially named Tom Bowen as athletic director. Bowen will replace current athletic director R.C. Johnson, who will retire after 16 years in June.

Bowen has been athletic director at San Jose State University  , where he produced annual budget surpluses for four years through the Spartan Foundation, a fundraising component at the school. San Jose State had more winning football seasons in Bowen’s first four seasons as athletic director than any year since 1993. Bowen started as athletic director in 2004. The school’s best record was 2006, when it was 9-4 and won the New Mexico Bowl.

The school also won Western Athletic Conference championships in women’s golf, women’s soccer, baseball and women’s swimming, with women’s water polo being a consistent top-10 national program.

Before joining San Jose State, Bowen was director of Community Affairs and the executive director of the 49ers Foundation for the San Francisco 49ers.
