The Senate Education Committee narrowly approved today a bill that would allow home-schooled students across the state to participate in public-school athletics.

Sponsored by Sen. Shadrack McGill, R-Macedona, SB 186 would become the Tim Tebow Act if it succeeds  — a reference to the former Florida Gators quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner who joined the NFL in 2010.

As a home-schooled student in Florida, Tebow was allowed to play for the local public school football team, which he led to a state championship before signing with the gators in 2006.

McGill has sponsored similar versions of the bill twice before.

This year’s proposal limits home-schooled students to athletics only, excluding them from other extracurricular activities.
