Stanford Extends Johnny Dawkins’ Contract

Stanford men’s basketball coach Johnny Dawkins has signed a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2015-16 season, the school announced Wednesday. Financial terms were not disclosed. Dawkins has a three-year record of 49-48.

“I am very excited about the future of our basketball program, athletic director Bob Bowlsby said in a prepared statement. Johnny and his staff have recruited very well and are on the brink of some very fun years ahead. Our team is young but very talented, and I am confident of the growth and maturation in the years ahead.”

Dawkins, 47, had three years remaining on the contract he signed in spring 2008 — a deal believed to be worth close to $1 million per season.

The Cardinal has not made an NCAA tournament appearance during Dawkins’ tenure and has had three consecutive losing seasons in conference play as crowds have waned at Maples Pavilion.

But a turnaround may be at hand: Wing Anthony Brown and big man Dwight Powell are two of the most talented sophomores in the Pac-12 Conference and form the core of a younger roster that could challenge for a top-six finish next season.

The summer recruiting season began this week. The new deal allows Dawkins to tell rising juniors and seniors that he will be under contract with Stanford throughout their college careers.
