Associate athletic director Ellen Ryan, who worked in the St. Joseph’s athletic department for 37 years, has announced her retirement from the university.

Ryan, who also was a senior women’s administrator at St. Joe’s, was the school’s first women’s basketball coach in 1973-74, guiding the Hawks to a 9-2 record.

During her tenure, women’s teams at St. Joe’s captured six Atlantic-10 Conference titles and amassed 2,091 victories.

“It was a very difficult decision to retire from Saint Joseph’s after 37 years,” Ryan said. “I’ve seen so many changes over the years in our program.”

Her retirement will be effective in August.
