JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Jackson Public School District is investigating claims that a Murrah High School basketball coach whipped his players with a weightlifting belt.

Some parents said they found out about the investigation involving coach Marlon Dorsey in a letter the school district sent out this week. School officials would not comment on the matter.

Corporal punishment has been banned in the district since 1991.

Jason Hubbard Sr., whose son is on the basketball team, told The Clarion-Ledger that he saw Dorsey whip players with a weightlifting belt for not performing plays properly.

Hubbard said he reported Dorsey on Monday after he allegedly watched the coach hit his son.

Dorsey’s telephone number is not listed and he could not immediately be reached.
