Gene Sartini has resigned as the football coach at Providence High School in Indiana after a 40-year run.

Sartini, 79, finished with a 268-158 record and five sectional titles at Providence.

He took Providence to the state finals in 1973 and 1993, and his career record is 279-168 in 42 years.

Sartini wanted a three-year contract to conclude his career after the 2013 season. But all Providence coaches work on one-year agreements as dictated by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, which oversees Providence and six other high schools in Indiana.
