Rutgers Coach Suspended Three Games

Rutgers University has suspended men’s basketball coach Mike Rice for three games and fined him $50, 000 — nearly one-tenth of his salary — for “inappropriate behavior and language, athletics director Tim Pernetti said this afternoon.

Pernetti said the punishment of Rice, who is in the third year of a five-year contract, came after an investigation into Rice’s interactions with players during practice. New Jersey Press Media has learned that those interactions occurred during Rice’s first two seasons and not the current one. Rutgers is 6-2 with a home game against Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) on Sunday.

There were obviously some things that were not to the Rutgers standard that we evaluated, but at the same time, the suspension does not involve any NCAA violations, Pernetti said. It’s a pattern, I would say, certainly something that, once we were made aware of it, we were able to deal with it in an appropriate manner.”

In addition to Sunday’s game against UAB, Rice will miss home games against Howard on Dec. 21 and Rider on Dec. 28. Associate head coach David Cox will run the program until Rice returns to his post Dec. 29.

“Mike will not be permitted to do anything (during that span), Pernetti said. He will be removed from the program. He will not be able to be active in his role inside or outside the university. It’s a complete removal from the program.”

That includes recruiting. Rutgers opens its Big East schedule on Jan. 2 with a trip to Syracuse.
