Purdue Treads Delicate Tightrope With Coaches’ Salaries

Since arriving in 1992 to assume leadership of Purdue’s athletic department, Morgan Burke has focused on three elements when negotiating coaching contracts.

Merit, marketplace and the impact on recruiting.

However, the marketplace continues to escalate when it comes to coaching salaries.

A 2009 college presidential survey conducted by the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics revealed coaches’ salaries are the “largest contributing factor in the unsustainable growth of athletics expenditures.”
