Penn State won’t renew the contract of Tim Curley, the athletic director who is on leave while he fights charges related to the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

“The university has notified Mr. Curley that it will not renew his contract when it expires in June. Due to this being a personnel matter, we cannot comment further,” said spokesman David La Torre.

Curley and retired senior vice president Gary Schultz are facing charges of perjury and failure to report abuse. State prosecutors argue that in 2001 then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary told them he walked in on Sandusky naked in a campus shower, in a sexual position, with a boy. The state Attorney General’s Office argues that Curley and Schultz lied about this when they testified before the grand jury investigating Sandusky.

Curley and Schultz, through their attorneys, have vehemently denied the allegations. They are scheduled to stand trial in January in Dauphin County, where the grand jury testimony took place.

The university has been paying the legal fees for the two. Penn State says its insurance policies will cover those costs.
