HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) –

Legislation that would protect Pennsylvania’s student-athletes from sudden cardiac arrest is on its way to the desk of Governor Tom Corbett.

The state House of Representatives on Wednesday approved House Bill 1610, which requires coaches and athletic directors to be properly educated about sudden cardiac arrest and trained to watch out for the symptoms.

Coaches, parents and students will be required to take online training about the conditions, and players showing symptoms must be removed from play or practice until evaluated and cleared by a medical professional.

The free informational training for coaches and sports officials will be available online at the state Department of Health’s website.

Gov. Tom Corbett has said he will sign the legislation.
