The city’s Catholic high school sports league will return to action this week for the first time since Hurricane Sandy devasted the area, and the public school league is allowing its teams to return to practice and could resume a full schedule by the weekend, officials said on Monday.

The CHSAA Class AA soccer playoffs will kick off with intersectional quarterfinal games on Tuesday at the Aviator Sports Complex, St. Francis Prep athletic director Sal Fischetti told The News. The games were originally scheduled to take place on Oct. 28 at Randall’s Island and SUNY Maritime but were postponed as the hurricane approached the area, bringing rain and high winds the day before it made a direct hit.

The PSAL, which had numerous schools damaged by the storm, has allowed its teams to return to practice. Several soccer playoffs games were played last weekend but the rest have been postponed, with no offical date yet set. A message on the PSAL web site says all league events are on hold “until further notice.” PSAL executive director Donald Douglas said “it’s possible” that the league’s football schedule will resume this weekend.

As of Monday afternoon, Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg said no schedules were set and that the priority was getting public schools reopened.

Sheepshead Bay football coach Fred Snyder said his team resumed practice on Tuesday and will continue practicing for the remainder of the week, though he’s unsure when the Sharks’ next game will be.

“I heard rumors we’re going to play Jefferson but I don’t know,” Snyder said.

“I’m in the dark myself,” Campus Magnet football coach Eric Barnett said of the PSAL’s scheduling. Barnett cancelled practice on Tuesday and is unclear of his team’s schedule for the rest of week.

Beach Channel HS was badly damaged by the hurricane, forcing football coach Victor Nazario to find a new site for his team to practice at.

Two fields will be used for four CHSAA soccer games on Tuesday at Aviator. At 3 p.m., St. Francis will take on Xavier and Regis will face Christ the King. At 5 p.m., Fordham Prep will play Xavierian and Molloy will play Stepinac.

The first rounds of the Catholic league football playoffs are tentatively set for this weekend. They were to be played this past weekend but were postponed as most of the league’s schools opted to remain closed.

“We’re still waiting to hear what the scheduling will be of games, but we plan to play this coming weekend,” said Fischetti, who’s a member of the CHSFL Executive Committee.

The CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens girls volleyball playoffs will resume Wednesday at St. Francis Prep. There will be a semifinals doubleheader, with Prep taking on Mary Louis at 4 p.m., followed by Molloy against Fontbonne Hall.
