The North Syracuse (N.Y.) Central School District’s amended budget for the 2013-14 school year cuts 25 coaches and eliminates eight teams.

The cuts will eliminate the junior varsity girls and boys tennis teams, one modified football team, one modified boy’s basketball team, one modified girl’s basketball team, one modified volleyball team, one modified softball team and a varsity golf team.

None of the cuts eliminate any programs completely, but fewer teams will mean fewer students will be able to participate in sports.

“Modified sports is where students learn the sports and it’s where they learn what sports they like,” said Kerry Bennett, a former longtime varsity softball coach for Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

North Syracuse is the second largest school district in Onondaga County and the district has a decorated sports program.

The Northstars softball team, which won their fourth straight Section III championship, is currently competing for the Class AA state title. The teams plays this afternoon. The girls’ basketball team won back-to-back Class AA state championships in 2011 and 2012. The team reached the state semifinals this past season.

Both the feeder programs for these varsity teams were cut in the amended budget. Reducing the number of modified teams in each sport from three to two.

Bennett said the modified program allows students to explore their talents and helps varsity coaches spot standout players. Modified teams also give more students the opportunity to participate in sports.

“You may have to make cuts on modified teams now,” Bennett said. “It’s not right.”

The district reduced athletic supplies by $40,000, pool rental by $4,800 and officiating costs by $7,200.

The following cuts to teams and coaches were approved by the board of education:
