North Dakota volleyball coach resigns after alleged physical altercation

A North Dakota volleyball head coach recently resigned mid-season due to allegations that she physically restrained a student-athlete among other allegations.

Angie Johnson coached at Northern Cass High School and was suspended without pay following being informed of Johnson allegedly restraining a student-athlete, exchanging obscenities and chipping a tooth of a student-athlete.

north dakotaNorthern Cass Superintendent Cory Steiner notified Johnson of the allegations and suspension in a letter on October 1.

A recent story from Inforum.com detailed the allegations against Johnson. Below is an excerpt from the Inforum.com story.

The letter alleged Johnson of “chipping a student athlete’s tooth, exchanging obscenities with a student-athlete and physically restraining a student-athlete.” No other details were provided.

Johnson declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by The Forum on Friday, Oct. 25. She formally resigned from the coaching position on Oct. 4.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I have been given in this role,” Johnson wrote in her resignation letter. “I will hold all of the relationships and memories close to my heart.”

Northern Cass Activities Director Bryce Laxdal declined comment Friday.

Johnson entered her sixth season as the Jaguars head coach this fall. She led Northern Cass to back-to-back North Dakota Class B state volleyball championships in 2022 and 2023.

Beth Head and Jamie Haseleu were named co-head coaches of the Jaguars volleyball team after Johnson resigned.
