New Mexico Fires Football Coach Mike Locksley After Series Of Missteps

September 26, 2011 / Football

The University of New Mexico announced it fired head football coach Mike Locksley on Sunday.

As sources speculated about Locksley’s dismissal all day, it became no longer a question of if, but when, UNM would make the annoucement.

Defensive coordinator George Harlow will be named the interim head coach at a press conference Monday at 3 p.m.

In more than two years at UNM, Locksley compiled a 2-26 record.

The Lobos had a meeting with coaches where Locksley announced his dismissal from the team.

UNM renegotiated Locksley’s contract during the off season so the school would only have to pay him $450,000 for the remainder of his contract if he’s fired this season.

Locksley has faced a tumultuous tenure at UNM on and off the field.

In his first year, he faced an age discrimination and sexual harassment complaint from his secretary.

Things got worse when Locksley served a one game suspension after an altercation with one of his coaches.

On Saturday, a recruit was arrested for DWI in a vehicle registered to Locksley.

The recruit was heading to University Stadium to watch Locksley coach his last game – a 45-42 loss to Sam Houston State – at UNM.
