Nebraska Football Ends Sponsorship With Pipeline Company

The University of Nebraska has ended its sponsorship agreement with TransCanada — a company trying to build a pipeline through the state.

“I want to make it clear that the athletic department has no position, either pro or con, regarding the proposed TransCanada Pipeline,” said Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne. “Since the contract negotiated by IMG/Husker Sports Network was signed last April and approved by the athletic department, the pipeline issue has become very political.”

Earlier this month, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman urged the White House to deny a permit to TransCanada based on the current route. The pipeline would go across the Ogallala Aquifer. Heineman worries that the water supply could be contaminated if there were ever a leak or spill from the pipeline.

Heineman has said he is not against the pipeline — but just the route.

TransCanada has said changing the route may cost too much.

Osborne said in a statement that the University avoids ads of a political nature. “Over the last two or three months the pipeline issue has been increasingly politicized. Our athletic events are intended to entertain and unify our fan base by providing an experience that is not divisive.”

University policy prohibits alcohol, tobacco and gambling advertising in the stadium.
