Cincinnati men’s basketball coach Mick Cronin has been publicly reprimanded for misconduct during the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced this morning, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

In a press release, the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee said Cronin used profane and abusive language toward a game official after the Bearcats’ East Region semifinal loss to Ohio State. As a result, the committee decided to publicly reprimand Cronin.

“Unfortunately, Coach Cronin’s postgame actions were not consistent with the expectations that the committee has for participants in the championship, said Hofstra athletic director Jeff Hathaway, chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. The committee has been and will continue to be supportive of high standards of sportsmanship and fair play for all tournament participants. Anything short of this does not serve participants or fans, the championship or the sport in a positive manner.”

Cincinnati had appealed the committee’s original decision to assess the reprimand. The Administrative Committee of the Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet reviewed relevant materials, correspondence and statements made during the appeal hearing before making its decision to uphold the reprimand.

According to the Enquirer, Cincinnati spokesman Andre Foushee said neither Cronin nor anyone else from the university would comment on the reprimand.
